No Anime Advance in Animated Short Oscar Race

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Wednesday that it has selected 10 animated short films to advance to the voting process for the 87th Academy Awards. None of the shortlisted films are short anime films, but Japanese animator Daisuke "Dice" Tsutsumi (Pixar's Toy Story 3, Monsters University) has a submission in "The Dam Keeper" with co-director Robert Kondo.
The list of advancing titles is as follows:
- "The Bigger Picture" by director Daisy Jacobs, producer Christopher Hees, and National Film and Television School
- "Coda" by director Alan Holly and And Maps And Plans studio
- "The Dam Keeper" by directors Robert Kondo and Dice Tsutsumi and Tonko House
- "Duet" by director Glen Keane, Glen Keane Productions & ATAP
- "Feast" by director Patrick Osborne, producer Kristina Reed and Walt Disney Animation Studios
- "Footprints" by director Bill Plympton and Bill Plympton Studio
- "Me and My Moulton" by director Torill Kove and Mikrofilm in co-production with the National Film Board of Canada
- "The Numberlys" by directors William Joyce and Brandon Oldenburg and Moonbot Studios
- "A Single Life" by director Joris Oprins and studio Job, Joris & Marieke
- "Symphony No. 42" by director Réka Bucsi and the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in Budapest
Originally, 58 pictures qualified for the category. The list will be narrowed down to three to five films for the final nominees. The academy will announce its official slate of nominees on January 15, 2015.
Mizuho Nishikubo and Production I.G's Giovanni's Island and Isao Takahata and Studio Ghibli's The Tale of the Princess Kaguya were submitted for nominations in the Animated Feature Film category.
For the 86th Academy Awards, Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's The Wind Rises received a nomination in the Animated Film category, while Shuhei Morita and Sunrise's "Possessions" ("Tsukumo") short anime film received a nomination in the Animated Short Film category. Kunio Katō became only the second Japanese animator to win an Oscar with his "La Maison en Petits Cubes" ("Tsumiki no Ie" or House of Blocks) short in 2009.
