Cartoon Network's Toonami Block to Air Black Lagoon Anime

posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins
2006 action-adventure series to premiere on March 22

Cartoon Network's Toonami programming block announced on Friday that it will air the Black Lagoon television anime series starting on Saturday, March 22. The show will replace Soul Eater, which Toonami will air the final episode of the week before.

The 12-episode television anime series based on Rei Hiroe's manga originally aired in Japan in 2006. Sunao Katabuchi directed and wrote the series and handled the series composition at Madhouse. Geneon Entertainment originally released the series on home video in North America in 2007, then Funimation acquired the series as a part of its distribution deal from Geneon Entertainment. Funimation then began re-releasing the series on home video in 2008.

The action-adventure series revolves around Rokura Okajima, a meek salaryman who one day gets kidnapped by pirates and held hostage while trying to deliver a disc to South East Asia for his job. Rokura eventually joins the pirate team under the name Rock, and he, along with the other three pirates of Black Lagoon, pursues various adventures.

Hiroe's manga has also inspired the Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage sequel and the Black Lagoon: Roberta's Blood Trail video anime series. Funimation has also released these two series on home video.
