Initial D Perfect Shift Online Game Heads to 3DS

posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins
Free-to-play multiplayer game arrives in Japan in spring 2014

This week's issue of Kadokawa's Famitsu magazine revealed in Japan on Thursday that Sega is developing the Initial D Perfect Shift Online Nintendo 3DS game based on Shuuichi Shigeno's manga. Sega will release the game digitally in spring 2014.

The basic multi-player game will be free to download, and players can purchase additional items. Famitsu reveals that Takumi Fujiwara and his Sprinter Trueno GT-Apex (AE86) car will be available in the game, as will Ryosuke Takahashi and his Savanna RX-7∞ III (FC3S) car. Players will be able to race various characters on familiar courses such as Akina and Akagi.

In the game, players will need to SHIFT UP and down while the car itself will drive automatically. Perfect timing in shifting gears will be the key to having a great driving technique and winning races.

Famitsu is currently hosting a few screenshots from the game.

Shigeno ended his Initial D manga in July after 18 years. The manga follows Takumi Fujiwara, a high school boy with a natural talent for driving, in his racing pursuits on the public highways. The manga inspired several television anime series (including the Fifth Stage that just ran last year), a live-action film, several original video anime projects, and a successful game line.

Tokyopop published the manga and released part of the anime before ceasing its North American publishing operations. Funimation also licensed and released some of the anime.
