Super Mario-kun Author Creates Levels in Super Mario Maker

Long-running manga protagonist also becomes playable

Not everyone knows about this iteration of Mario, but players will get acquainted soon enough.

Yukio Sawada, the author of manga series Super Mario-kun, is trying his hand at creating his own Mario levels in recent Wii U game Super Mario Maker as part of a official collaboration with Nintendo. In celebration of both the manga's upcoming 25th anniversary and the Super Mario franchise's 30th anniversary, the author will create a series of levels to share around world on the game's World Course.

As depicted above, those who beat Sawada's levels will receive his character "Mario-kun" as a special playable character in the game.

Far more expressive than his original 2D 8-Bit counterpart, Mario-kun features his own sprites and animations when played across any level.

Sawada's levels will be available to play starting on November 6.

First published in CoroCoro Comic in 1991, Super Mario-kun is a children's manga that retells the stories of various games in the Mario franchise. It recently released its 50th volume on October 28. In 2013, the manga beat out fellow Corocoro manga Doraemon as the publication's longest manga.
