Fire Emblem Fates Adds Same-Sex Marriage Option

Nintendo confirmed with video game news website Polygon on Tuesday that the upcoming Fire Emblem Fates games for Nintendo 3DS will introduce a same-sex marriage option for the player's avatar.

Fire Emblem Fates' "Conquest" (Anya Ōkoku) edition will feature one male character that the male avatar will be able to marry. The "Birthright" (Byakuya Ōkoku edition will feature one female character that the female avatar can marry. Both options will be available in the downloadable third edition of the game.

Nintendo made the following statement regarding the inclusion:

We believe that our gameplay experiences should reflect the diversity of the communities in which we operate and, at the same time, we will always design the game specifications of each title by considering a variety of factors, such as the game's scenario and the nature of the game play. In the end of course, the game should be fun to play. We feel that Fire Emblem Fates is indeed enjoyable to play and we hope fans like the game.

Nintendo's announcement that it would not allow same-sex marriage in the 3DS game Tomodachi Life sparked controversy last year. The company later apologized for the omission and promised to make future Tomodachi Life games more inclusive.

Fire Emblem Fates ships in Japan on Thursday and in the west in 2016.
