NieR New Project Reunites NieR Staff for Followup Game

posted on by Rafael Antonio Pineda
Staff will develop third-person action RPG under PlatinumGames

Square Enix announced at their E3 2015 press conference on Tuesday that developer PlatinumGames (Bayonetta, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance) is developing a new NieR third-person action role-playing game, tentatively titled NieR New Project. The PlayStation 4 game will serve as a followup to Cavia's 2010 NieR. Square Enix also unveiled a trailer during the press conference which shows the game's main staff and some of the artwork.

The project reunites the director, producer, and composer of the original NieR game. Freelance developer Taro Yoko (Drakengard series, NieR) will helm the project as director under PlatinumGames. Yosuke Saito (Dragon Quest X, NieR) is credited as producer, and Keiichi Okabe (Drakengard series, NieR, Yuki Yuna Is a Hero) will compose the music. Takahisa Taura (Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Anarchy Reigns) will handle the game design, and Akihiko Yoshida (Bravely Second, Final Fantasy XIV) will design the game's characters.

Square Enix has not yet announced the game's release date, but Amazon is listing a PlayStation 4 game for December 31, 2016. Square Enix will provide more information on the game this fall.

The now-defunct Japanese game developer Cavia (Drakengard, Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles) developed the original NieR game as a spinoff of the Drakengard series in 2010. Two versions of the game were released for two different consoles: Cavia released NieR Gestalt for the Xbox 360, and NieR Replicant for the PlayStation 3. NieR Replicant featured a different character design for the protagonist, and minor differences in the plot. NieR was the last game Cavia developed before being disbanded and absorbed into AQ Interactive Inc. in July 2010. Taro Yoko went on to direct Drakengard 3 under Access Games.
