Two Robots to Join Together in Holy Matrimony

posted on by Eric Stimson
Frois and Roborin to marry in Tokyo restaurant

Considering how advanced robotics science is getting in Japan, it would seem inevitable that eventually two robots would take the next step... and get married. Well, that's what two of Japan's iconic robots will do on June 27.

The groom is Frois, a robot designed by Maywa Denki using mostly cheap household items — for instance, his head is a bucket commonly used as a seat in Japanese bathrooms. He is somewhat well-known for appearing in this commercial for Quatroboom, a line of pachinko parlors on the Sea of Japan coast. (Pachinko is a Japanese arcade game similar to pinball.)

The bride is Roborin, a robot made by Takayuki Tōdō to more closely resemble a human. She gained attention at last year's Nico Nico Chokaigi for her alleged close resemblance to AKB48 singer Yuki Kashiwagi.

The wedding will take place on June 27 at CAY, a restaurant in Aoyama, Tokyo. The ceremony will be hosted by Pepper, an emotion recognition robot developed by SoftBank, and the comedian Tomonori Jinnai. It promises to feature entertainment by illustrious guests, costume changes (er, "version upgrades"), a movie of the couple's time together, a letter from the bride, and other common wedding reception activities.

Tickets cost 10,000 yen (about $83), which covers all-you-can-eat-and-drink. They can be purchased here.
