Tokyo Exhibition Examines the Cultural Impact of Naruto, Utena, Resident Evil, Higurashi

The National Art Center in Tokyo will hold the "Manga * Anime * Games from Japan" exhibition studying the cultural impact of anime, manga, and games like Naruto, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Higurashi: When They Cry, Resident Evil and more starting on June 24.

The exhibition is focusing strictly on the post-Tezuka era after 1989, when the legendary manga creator passed away. The event is focusing on the following themes

Prologue: Contemporary Heroes and Heroines with examples including Naruto, Sailor Moon, Revolutionary Girl Utena, The Seven Deadly Sins, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, and Super Mario 3D World.

“Reality” as Depicted by Technology: The World of Works and Visual Expression with examples including Dennō Coil, Knights of Sidonia, Gantz, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid, and Ghost in the Shell: Innocence.

The Fruits of a Network Society with examples including Voices of a Distant Star, Higurashi: When They Cry, and The Crimson Room.

Encounters and Gatherings: Games as "Places" with examples including the Pokémon game franchise, Dance Dance Revolution, Street Fighter II, and the Final Fantasy XIII/XIV RPGs.

The World: A Place Where Characters Dwell with examples including K-ON!, Uta no Prince Sama, Sengoku Basara, and Hatsune Miku.

The Intersection of the Ordinary and the Extraordinary with examples including The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Lucky Star, anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day.

A Link to Reality with examples including JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and Say “I Love You.”

Epilogue The Creators' Handbook with examples including Paprika, Macross Plus, Gran Turismo 6, and Metropolis.

"Manga * Anime * Games from Japan" will run from June 24 to August 31 in Tokyo before moving to the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art in Kobe. It will run in Kobe from September 19 to November 23.
