Japanese Karaoke Goers Are Tired of Hearing Cruel Angel's Thesis

If you go to karaoke bars, even in America, you can count on a few things. There will be plenty of drunk performances and without fail, someone will warble through Jimmy Buffett's "Margaritaville." Karaoke in Japan is whole 'nother level, with private rooms and a huge selection of tracks. These places aren't limited to the Billboard Top 100 and have a variety of anisongs to choose from for aspiring otaku singers. But just like in America, one singer is going to pick their tried and true favorite even if it is the fiftieth time.
Karaoke giant JOYSOUNDxUGA keeps track each year of which anisongs are sung the most. Neon Genesis Evangelion's opening theme "Cruel Angel's Thesis" regularly maintains a spot in the top five. It also happens that people are tired of hearing their friends sing the song every time they go out. A survey conducted in March asked 362 adult men and women which anisongs they're most sick of hearing. "Cruel Angel's Thesis" was #1 with a staggering 40.6% of the vote.
The song wasn't the only popular go-to that people seem to secretly hate. Most of the "must sing" karaoke songs listed back in January ranked or were mentioned as alternate answers. The top five include:
- Cruel Angel's Thesis (Neon Genesis Evangelion) - 40.6%
- Touch (Touch) - 12.5%
- Uchū Senkan Yamato (Space Battleship Yamato) - 9.4%
- Gatchaman no Uta (Gatchaman) - 4.7%
- Cutey Honey (Cutey Honey) - 3.1% tie
- Ai o Torimodose!! (Fist of the North Star) - 3.1% tie
- Let it Go (Frozen) - 3.1% tie
Other worn-out songs include Moonlight Densetsu (Sailor Moon), Hajimete no Chū (Kiteretsu Daihyakka), sailing day (One Piece), and Butter-fly (Digimon Adventure).
