Amazon Japan Starts Free Manga Magazine Reading Service

posted on by Egan Loo

The Japanese arm of the online retailer Amazon launched a new service for reading digital editions of manga magazines for free on Wednesday. The initial Kindle Muryō Manga Zasshi (Kindle Free Manga Magazine) lineup includes the first digital edition of Shueisha's Grand Jump magazine, as well as Futabasha's Manga Action, Leed's Comic Ran Twins, Ichijinsha's Monthly Comic Zero-Sum, DeNA's Manga Box service, and Square Enix's Hobo Gekkan Otameshi Gangan (Almost Monthly Trial Gangan).

People can read the contents not only on Amazon's own Kindle devices, but also on smartphones, tables, PCs, and other devices.

Amazon launched its Kindle e-book platform with over 50,000 Japanese books, including 15,000 manga volumes, in Japan in 2012. Kodansha announced on Monday that it plans to publish all its manga magazines digitally on the same day that the magazines ship in print. Kodansha already publishes its Morning magazine digitally, and Shueisha has done the same for several of its titles including the flagship magazine Weekly Shonen Jump.
