posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released its short list of films contending for an Oscar nomination in the Visual Effects category on Friday. Gareth Edwards and Legendary Pictures' Godzilla film made the list alongside nine other films. The full list includes:

  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier
  • Godzilla
  • The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
  • Interstellar
  • Maleficent
  • Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb
  • Transformers: Age of Extinction
  • X-Men: Days of Future Past
  • Guardians of the Galaxy
  • Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Edwards' Godzilla film opened in the United States in May and earned over US$500 million worldwide. Legendary president and chief creative officer Jon Jashni told Variety in May, “Our initial goal was to re-brand and re-establish the property in a Tiffany way. Now, we're trying to take in all of the results of [opening] weekend.”

Writer Max Borenstein and Edwards will return for the sequel, slated to open on June 8, 2018.
