Makoto Shinkai makes ad on Vietnam's Noi Bai Airport with actor Kanata Hongou, Unlimited tone

Anime director Makoto Shinkai (Voices of a Distant Star, The Place Promised in Our Early Days, 5 Centimeters Per Second, Children Who Chase Lost Voices from Deep Below, The Garden of Words) made his third 30-second animated commercial for the construction company Taisei. The commercial centers around a son who follows in his father's footsteps in construction. The son eventually works as an engineer on the Noi Bai International Airport serving the capital of Vietnam.

Boy: My old man was... Big. I wanted to get out of his shadow...
Mother: You should have just stayed here...
Boy: And I wanted to go somewhere faraway...
Father: Do what you want.
Boy: I was desperate.
Boy: Vietnam, Noi Bai Airport. As I create the entrance to this country, I'm probably chasing after him.
Text: Work that will stay on the map.

CoMix Wave Film produced the animation with Shinkai directing, storyboarding, and filming. The character designer and animation director is Kenichi Tsuchiya (The Garden of Words). Kanata Hongou (Btooom!, live-action Attack on Titan, Gantz, The Prince of Tennis ) voices the main character, and Takanori Hoshino and Hiroko Tsuji voice his father and mother, respectively. Unlimited tone performed the song "Change."

Shinkai has directed other ads in the past, including his first two Taisei ones about the Bosporus Strait Tunnel and Sri Lanka freeway, and one for The Shinano Mainichi Shimbun paper from his hometown.

CoMix Wave Film produced an earlier commercial for Taisei's construction of the New Doha International Airport. However, Ushio Tazawa, not Shinkai, directed this earlier commercial:

Shinkai also made the anime short 'Dareka no Manazashi' (Someone's Gaze) for the Nomura Real Estate Group.
