Deron Bennett's Cyborg 009 adaptation also nominated

The Harvey Awards, which honors outstanding work in comics and sequential art, revealed its list of nominations for this year's awards on Wednesday. Hajime Isayama's Attack on Titan, Taiyo Matsumoto's Sunny, and Shigeru Mizuki's Showa: A History of Showa Japan (Comic Showa-Shi) are nominated in the "Best American Edition of Foreign Material" category. The manga are nominated alongside Matz's The Killer volume 4 by Studio Archaia and Ulli Lust's Today Is the Last Day of the Rest of Your Life by Fantagraphics Books.

Also nominated is Deron Bennett's American comic adaptation of Shōtarō Ishinomori's Cyborg 009 manga. Bennett's Cyborg 009 is nominated for Best Original Graphic Novel, Best Letterer, and Special Award for Excellence in Presentation.

Attack on Titan has topped graphic novel sales in North America and Japan, with over 30 million copies sold. Its anime adaptation currently airing on Adult Swim's Toonami block. Kodansha USA is currently releasing the manga in North America.

Matsumoto's Sunny manga won Slate Book Review and Vermont's Center for Cartoon Studies' Best Graphic Novel prize in March. Viz Media released the third and final volume in April.

Matsumoto's slice-of-life story focuses on children at Star Kids Home orphanage. An abandoned yellow car, Sunny, takes them anywhere they want to go. With Sunny, the children can escape their circumstances and go on imaginary adventures around the world and beyond.

Mizuki's Showa: A History of Showa Japan covers the first 14 years of Japan's Showa era (1926-1939). Drawn & Quarterly will release the first omnibus volume on September 3. Mizuki himself was born in 1922, and has previously drawn on his experiences in World War II for his Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths manga. Mizuki originally wrote Showa: A History of Showa Japan in 1988-1989 (the Showa era ended in 1989), and Kodansha published it in eight compiled volumes in 1994. The book is also nominated for Columbia University's Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission Translation Prize.

Mizuki won the Asahi Prize in 2009 for his contributions to culture and society. His Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths manga was nominated for a Harvey Award in 2012.

Unlike the Eisner Awards and other awards in the North American comic book industry, the Harvey Awards are nominated and selected by the comic book professionals themselves. The Harvey Awards will be held in conjunction with Baltimore Comic-Con in Baltimore, Maryland on September 6.

Last year, the 22nd volume of Naoki Urasawa's 20th Century Boys manga was nominated in the same category. In 2012, Shigeru Mizuki's Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths and Ōji Suzuki's A Single Match manga were nominated. In 2011, the Ax - Alternative Manga anthology was nominated in the same category.
