Idea Factory Discusses Censoring in Western Monster Monpiece

Company cites sexual images of younger-looking characters as one issue

Idea Factory issued a statement on Wednesday regarding the censorship in its North American and European release of Compile Heart's Monster Monpiece PlayStation Vita game.

Within the game, the Monster Girl cards remove clothing as each character levels up. Idea Factory will maintain all 350+ Monster Girl cards but approximately 40 will not change images after it gains levels. The censored cards can level up but card images will be the same as the lower level, even though they have leveled up and have become more powerful.

This was a very difficult decision since we work very hard to satisfy our fans and want to bring the same content being offered in Japan. However, Western society is not as lenient as that of Japan when sexual images are involved—especially images of humanoids that appear to be younger than a socially acceptable age. The borderline of what is “acceptable” will always be extremely gray and vary from person to person, but as a responsible company working in the U.S., we had to make the difficult decision that we did. We sincerely apologize for those who do not agree with any level of censorship, but we greatly appreciate your understanding with the decision we have made.

The censored content is the same across the North American and European versions. Idea Factory explained that Europe's Pan European Game Information (PEGI) system rated the game for ages 12+ due to lack of violence while North America's Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rated it Mature for sexual content.

Idea Factory's official English website is currently streaming a promotional video for the game. Idea Factory will release Monster Monpiece with English text and Japanese voiceover this spring via the PlayStation Network.
