Film to compete against The Croods, Despicable Me 2, Ernest and Celestine, Frozen

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Thursday that Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's The Wind Rises is nominated in the Animated Film category. The film will compete against The Croods, Despicable Me 2, Ernest and Celestine, and Frozen.

Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away is the only Japanese animated feature to win an Oscar. Kunio Katō's "La Maison en Petits Cubes" won in the Best Animated Short Film category at the 81st Annual Academy Awards in 2009.

Hayao Miyazaki's 11th and final film lost to The Great Beauty (La grande bellezza) by Italy's Paolo Sorrentino at the 71st Annual Golden Globes on Sunday. The film was nominated for the Asia Pacific Screen Awards but did not win, and has been nominated for an Annie Award and a Satellite Award. The Wind Rises has also recently won the Best Animated Film Award from the New York Film Critics Circle, The National Board of Review, The Boston Society of Film Critics, the San Diego Film Critics Society, The Chicago Film Critics Association, the Online Film Critics Society, and the Toronto Film Critics Association.

Update: Shuhei Morita and Sunrise's "Possessions" ("Tsukumo") anime short also received a nomination in the Animated Short Film category.
