Hayao Miyazaki's Retirement Press Conference Streamed in English

Ghibli founder to explain reasons for leaving feature films on Friday at 1 a.m. EDT

The Niconico video service will stream the Friday press conference on Hayao Miyazaki's retirement from feature films — not only with Japanese audio, but also with English audio.

Both streams will begin on Friday at 2:00 p.m. (1:00 a.m. EDT). Miyazaki will appear in person to explain his reasons for retirement. Also attending will be Studio Ghibli President Koji Hoshino and Miyazaki's longtime producer Toshio Suzuki.

Hoshino announced on Sunday that Miyazaki is retiring from making feature films; The Wind Rises is Miyazaki's 11th and final feature film. Shortly thereafter, NTV suddenly replaced its Friday evening airing of X-Men Origins: Wolverine with Miyazaki's Porco Rosso, and The Wind Rises' weekend box office receipts rose compared to the previous week's.

Disney's Touchstone Pictures will release The Wind Rises in North America with an English dub produced by Studio Ghibli International and Frank Marshall (From Up On Poppy Hill, The Secret World of Arrietty, Ponyo). The film is already making the rounds at the film festivals in Venice, Toronto, and New York, and it will play in an Oscar-qualifying one-week run in Los Angeles in November.
