NEETs in Japan Reach 630,000, Women Account for Almost 40%

posted on by Joanne Mertz

According to a labor survey conducted by Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the total number of NEETs (young people not in education, employment, or training) in the country reached 630,000 last December, with women making up almost 40% of the total NEET population (230,000).

However, women categorized as "domestic help" are not included in the total NEET count, and the number of female NEETs may actually be larger than tallied. Although women make up 40% of the NEET population, most television programs that attempt to spread awareness and assist NEETs target male audiences without close-ups on the problems that women face as well.
