Anime NYC event to host world premiere of sequel on Saturday

Anime News Network's coverage of Anime NYC 2018 is sponsored by Yen Press.

The Mob Psycho 100 panel at the Anime NYC event on Friday revealed a new key visual for Mob Psycho 100 II, BONES' second anime season of ONE's Mob Psycho 100 manga. The event also revealed that the show will premiere in Japan on January 7, and confirmed that the new season will stream on Crunchyroll.

In Japan, the anime will premiere on Tokyo MX on January 7 at 11:00 p.m., before airing an hour later on BS-Fuji. The anime will then premiere on ABC TV on January 10.

The Anime NYC convention will host the world premiere of the anime on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Voice actor Setsuo Ito, who plays Shigeo "Mob" Kageyama, will attend the screening.

The staff at BONES is returning from the first season to work on the second season.

The anime's first season premiered in Japan in July 2016, and Crunchyroll streamed the series with English subtitles as it aired in Japan. Funimation streamed an English dub for the anime and released the series on home video. The series joined Adult Swim's Toonami programming block on October 27.

Funimation describes the story:

Kageyama Shigeo (a.k.a. Mob) is an 8th grader with powerful psychic abilities. Workingunder his not-so-capable master, Reigen, Mob uses his powers to exorcise evil spirits. But his will to be normal causes him to suppress his powers and feelings until he hits 100 percent — a point where his pent-up emotions are unleashed and a darker power takes over.

The manga also inspired a live-action drama starring Tatsuo Hamada in January. TV Tokyo produced the live-action show in collaboration with Netflix. Netflix US premiered the show on May 22.

The manga has also inspired two stage plays. The first stage play ran from January 6-14 at The Galaxy Theatre in Tokyo. The second play ran at The Galaxy Theatre in Tokyo from September 13-17 and at Shinkobe Oriental Theater in Hyōgo from September 20-23.

ONE (One-Punch Man) launched the manga on Ura Sunday in 2012 and later in Shogakukan's Manga ONE app in 2014. Shogakukan published the manga's 16th and final compiled book volume on July 19.
