NANA's Ai Yazawa Draws Historical Men's Fashion for New Book

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Manga artist Ai Yazawa has taken on a variety of small illustration projects since putting her popular manga NANA on hold in 2009 while being treated for an unspecified serious illness. She contributed artwork for singer JUJU's single Iiwake last year, drew a mini-manga featuring characters from her series Tenshi Nanka ja Nai and Gokinjō Monogatari in 2016, contributed new images to the 2015 NANA calendar, and published a new "Junko's Room" chapter, her first new manga in over three years, in 2013.

This year Yazawa is again offering illustrations for a unique project focusing on one of the most notable aspects of her artwork: fashion. She handled insert illustrations within Seijiro Sato's historical book Street Tradition: Men's Fashion is Learning from the Past. Yazawa created 31 illustrations for the book.

The book chronicles the history of men's street fashion that was born from Germany's Swing Youth (Swingjugend) from the 1930s and American zootsuits. Sato's book covers the formation of men's street style and how its finer details evolved over time.

The book goes on sale in Japan on October 5 for 1,620 yen (US$14).
