Japan's "No.1 Cosplayer's" Salary Revealed on Abema TV

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Abema TV aired a segment titled "Kyūyo Meisai" (Salary Statement) on June 3 revealing what Japan's "No.1 young cosplayer" Uramaru earns for her photo shoots. According to the program, Uramaru earns 10,000 yen per minute (US$100) for photo sessions plus an additional 1,000 yen (US$10) for a two-shot check.

Even though the price is high, participants say a photo with Uramaru is worth even more than 10,000 yen. Some student fans save their part-time job money and head to Nagoya each month to get a picture with her. During the day of the recording, Uramaru earned 277,000 yen (US$2,500) including photo ops and merchandise. Uramaru pockets between 20-30% of her sales. She schedules two or three photo sessions each month and also makes radio appearances and designs characters

Abema TV also checked out Uramaru's home in Tokyo. She rents an average side room with a kitchen for 85,000 yen (US$775). Her closet was brimming with costumes but she otherwise lives a pretty modest life subsisting on cup ramen. The program revealed at the end that all things considered, Uramaru's monthly income is about 300,000 yen (US$2,700). She is signed to an agency so even with merchandise sales, her salary is mostly fixed.

Uramaru's earnings are comparable Kamen Joshi (Masked Girls) idol group member Erina Kamiya who garnered attention in November for revealing her salary on YouTube. Kamiya earns 477,426 yen (US$4,200) per month, but only after living on her savings for awhile first.
