Intersex Manga Creator Shō Arai Publishes Book About Sexual Minorities

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Manga creator Shō Arai is the subject of the upcoming Seibetsu ga, Nai! Intersex Mangaka no Queer na Hibi (I Have No Sex!: An Intersex Manga Creator's Daily Life) documentary film. In part as preparation for the film's premiere on July 28, Arai released a new manga volume titled Gakkōde wa Oshiete Kurenai 'Sekumai' no Hanashi (The Story of Sexual Minorities They Didn't Tell You In School). The manga is separate from Arai's other Seibetsu ga, Nai! four-panel essay manga and compiles Arai's columns from Bunkasha's Hontō ni atta Waraeru Hanashi magazine.

In the manga, Arai answers questions about sexual minorities from both a female and male perspective. The manga is formatted to be informative for individuals who aren't familiar with sexual minorities but don't know where to start. The manga also contains Arai's "My Everyday Life" and "Kaigai no Sekumai Kikō-hen" (Sexual Minorities Overseas Travel Story) chapters. "Kaigai no Sekumai Kikō-hen" talks about experiences like attending an LGBT parade in Hong Kong and sexual reassignment surgery in Thailand. Parts of these stories will also appear in the Seibetsu ga, Nai! Intersex Mangaka no Queer na Hibi film.

The movie raised 1,973,800 yen (US$18,000) of its 4 million yen (about US$37,000) goal to fund screenings and distribution publicity.

Arai's Seibetsu ga, Nai! four-panel essay manga, which reflects Arai's personal experiences as an intersex person was first published as a compiled book volume in 2005, and the 15th volume shipped in 2015.
