Cup Noodle Finds Love in the Midst of Armageddon in Final 'Hungry Days' Ad

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Cup Noodle pulled the wool over eyes last week when it debuted what appeared to be its final 'Hungry Days' campaign ad. The ad series had, up until that point, reimagined popular anime characters at the precipice of their youth to invoke a specific, nostalgic feeling.

Last week's ad returned to the style of the first teaser, showing a couple amid destruction and replaced the theme song "Kinen Satsuei" (Commemorative Photo) by BUMP OF CHICKEN with Aerosmith's "I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing." The Academy Award nominated song was originally produced for the film Armageddon starring lead singer Steven Tyler's daughter, Liv Tyler, in 1998. Apparently the song replacement was a much larger hint than previously thought.

Cup Noodle premiered its actual final ad on Thursday. The ad focuses on two original characters and, while destruction rains down around them, the boy musters up the courage to ask the girl if she likes anyone. The couple then confirms their feelings for one another.

The video description includes the phrase, "No matter what happens in the world, no one can take away our youth."

The ad connects back to previous three ads which all hinted at an incoming meteorite.

The "Hungry Days" campaign brought together classic anime works with character redesigns by manga artist Eisaku Kubonouchi (Chocolat, Cherry). The advertisement campaign had three exhibition showings last year where exclusive merchandise was sold. Two of the exhibitions were in Japan while another was in Taiwan.
