X Japan to Perform in Coachella Music Festival in April

Band will perform on both weekends of California festival

The Coachella Music Festival announced on Tuesday that rock band X Japan will perform two shows at the festival on April 14 and April 21. The music festival will be held in Indio, California on April 13-15 and April 20-22.

Band leader YOSHIKI has been recovering from surgery he underwent in Los Angeles last May. YOSHIKI previously performed on piano during his recovery, but he returned to playing drums with X Japan on NHK's annual Kōhaku Uta Gassen (Red and White Song Battle) television program, which aired on December 31.

YOSHIKI was previously diagnosed with cervical foraminal stenosis (narrowing of the cervical disc space) in 2009, and his symptoms reappeared in October 2016. In addition to cancelling performances in Japan, he cancelled an appearance at Anime Expo last July due to his recovery. He also cancelled his appearance in Reykjavik, Iceland in October due to doctor's orders after collapsing during his European tour.

X Japan's most notable anime contributions were the songs in the music video collection and later X movie. The animation Studio Madhouse adapted both productions from CLAMP's X manga. The surviving band members — Toshimitsu "Toshi" Deyama, Yoshiki Hayashi, Tomoaki "Pata" Ishizuka, and Hiroshi "Heath" Morie — reunited in 2007, 10 years after they first disbanded and nine years after the death of guitarist Hideto "Hide" Matsumoto.
