2017's Most Appealing Character Poll Includes Old Favorites, New Surprises

Where did this season's Bone Daddy place? Click to find out!

The end of a December is a time for countdowns. Here at Anime News Network we countdown the very best of the year, the very best of the season, and over at my column I countdown literally everything. You can look forward to an even larger 2017 countdown feature coming next week, but given all the various "Best ofs" coming out, what's left?

Obviously, counting down this year's most charming 2D characters. Charapedia asked its readers to pick which anime guys and gals won their hearts this year. The results may surprise you.

The number one choice was literal cat girl Serval from Kemono Friends. The character's placement is just the latest in a long list of the anime series' popularity accomplishments. The series was a top pick for anime kanji of the year, and it's also ranked in Yahoo! Searches, karaoke tracks, and top tweets.

In second place is Sagiri Izumi, the titular Eromanga Sensei and the not-quite-sister that illustrates her not-quite-brother's light novels. The series definitely won over its own fans this year, as "little sister" was also a top anime kanji choice.

In third place is burgeoning mage Chise Hatori from The Ancient Magus' Bride. The redhead's struggle to find herself in a newly found magical world alongside her mentor, the skull-faced Elias, is currently airing.

The full top 20 characters for 2017 is:

  1. Serval (Kemono Friends)
  2. Sagiri Izumi (Eromanga Sensei)
  3. Chise Hatori (The Ancient Magus' Bride)
  4. Asuna Yuuki (Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale)
  5. Gintoki Sakata (Gintama.)
  6. Kaban (Kemono Friends)
  7. Izuminokami Kanesada (Katsugeki! Tōken Ranbu)
  8. Hozuki (Hozuki's Coolheadedness)
  9. Shōto Todoroki (My Hero Academia)
  10. Maika Sakuranomiya (Blend S)
  11. Megumi Kato (Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend Flat)
  12. Elias Ainsworth (The Ancient Magus' Bride)
  13. Phosphophyllite (Land of the Lustrous)
  14. Ichimatsu Matsuno (Mr. Osomatsu)
  15. Kagura (Gintama.)
  16. Ōni (Children of the Whales)
  17. Katsuki Bakugō (My Hero Academia)
  18. Nanachi (Made in Abyss)
  19. Ernesti "Eru" Echevarria (Knight's & Magic)
  20. Karamatsu Matsuno (Mr. Osomatsu)

Most of this year's list is unique but there are some characters reappearing from previous years. Gintoki ranked in 2016 and 2015 while Karamatsu and his brothers Osomatsu and Ichimatsu all appeared on the 2015 list. Asuna was in the top 20 in 2014 along with many other characters from Sword Art Online. It's worth noting that while the original Love Live! girls dominated Charapedia's ranking in 2014, none of their Sunshine counterparts have ranked over the last two years.
