Kemono Friends Director Tatsuki is a Penguin at Twitter Trends Grand Prix 2017

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Former Kemono Friends director TATSUKI appeared to be honoring the late Grape-kun, the real penguin that took social media by storm this year after he developed a crush on the Hululu cut-out in his enclosure at the Tobu Zoo. Not one for subtlety, TATSUKI wore a full-scale penguin mask for the entirety of the award show, even when he went on stage to accept Anime of the Year.

TATSUKI expressed surprise at the win, but said ultimately the prize was also for all the Kemono Friends viewers.

Kemono Friends took first place, ranking above Love Live! and Yuri!!! on Ice. Girls und Panzer, Eromanga Sensei, Katsugeki! Tōken Ranbu, Fate/Apocrypha, Dream Festival!, Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru, and New Game!! rounded out the top 10.

The Twitter Trend awards are based on activity on the social media platform.

The popular mobile game Fate/Grand Order took the Game of the Year award, a surprise after it was looked over in Google Play's own awards. Other top games included Final Fantasy XV, Kantai Collection, Splatoon 2, Dragon Quest XI, Monster Hunter XX, Dragon Ball Z Dokkan Battle, Pokémon GO, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and NieR:Automata.

When it came to Word of the Year, Fate/Grand Order took that prize, too. "FGO" was the most tweeted word just above Kemono Friends. Other highlights were Tōken Ranbu, SMAP, Merlin, and Precure.

The Word of the Year is a separate category from "Hashtag of the Year." When it came to hashtags, the mobile game and anime Monster Strike won out with #monsuto. In second place was the idol group Nogizaka46, followed by two hashtags for Fate/Grand Order, #fgo and #fatego. Dragon Ball hashtags "Dragon Ball" and "Dokkan Battle" also ranked, as did Kemono Friends, Splatoon 2, several Tōken Ranbu hashtags, and the Nintendo Switch console.
