Warau Salesman NEW Wins Anime Buzzword Contest for 2017

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

The only two otaku-related terms nominated for this year's Ryūkōgo Taishō buzzword contest failed to receive awards. However, anime words still have a chance to shine with Gadget Tsūshin's Anime Ryūkōgo Taishō awards, which also announced results on Friday.

Although Kemono Friends' catchphrase topped the results for the first half of the year, Warau Salesman NEW came out on top for the year overall. "Dōn!," Fukuzō Moguro's catchphrase from Warau Salesman NEW, ranked at #1 (Gold Prize) in the contest. Serval's "Wa-i! Ta-noshii! Sugo-i!" ("Wow! Fun! Amazing!") exclamations from Kemono Friends ranked at #2 (Silver Prize). "Tomarun jane- zo..." ("Don't stop..."), a certain character's last words in Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans, followed at #3 (Bronze Prize).

Here are the top 10 results of the anime buzzword contest:

  1. "Dōn!" (Fukuzō Moguro's catchphrase from Warau Salesman NEW)
  2. "Wa-i! Ta-noshii! Sugo-i!" ("Wow! Fun! Amazing!"; Serval's catchphrases from Kemono Friends)
  3. "Tomarun jane- zo..." ("Don't stop..."; character's last words in Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans)
  4. "◯◯ ga tokui na Friends nanda ne" ("[Someone] is a Friend good at [something]"; catchphrase from Kemono Friends)
  5. "Ippen shinde miru?" ("Perhaps... it is time to die"; Ai's catchphrase from Hell Girl)
  6. "Maji yabakune?" ("Isn't that pretty wicked?"; catchphrase from Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid)
  7. "Datenshi" ("useless angel" or "fallen angel"; used to describe Gabriel from Gabriel DropOut)
  8. "Kadokawa wakaranai" ("I don't understand Kadokawa"; Land of the Lustrous)
  9. "Kemono wa itemo nokemono wa inai" ("Although there are beasts, there are no outcasts"; lyrics from Kemono Friends' hit single "Welcome to Japari Park")
  10. "Wakkanne☆" ("I don't know"; Katori's words from Tsuredure Children)

ABEMA Prime, the news program for the AbemaTV Japanese streaming service, held the buzzword contest centered on phrases popular in the anime community this year. The program accepted user-submitted words until November 13. The list of nominated buzzwords also included phrases from anime such as New Game!, Restaurant to Another World, Aho Girl, Gamers!, and BanG Dream!.

Even though "Kemono Friends" and "Touken Ranbu" did not win in the larger Ryūkōgo Taishō 2017 contest, they ranked at #1 and #4, respectively, on the top 10 list of the most-tweeted words among the nominees.
