Super Mario Odyssey sells estimated 2 million copies in 1st 3 days

President of Nintendo Tatsumi Kimishima presented on Tuesday at the company's six months financial results briefing for the fiscal year ending on March 31, 2018. Kimishima revealed sales and trends for Nintendo's consoles, handheld devices, and games.

Nintendo estimates that the Super Mario Odyssey Nintendo Switch game sold more than 2 million copies in the first three days after launching on October 27. Kimishima noted that Nintendo hopes that the game will be an "evergreen" title that will continue to sell well past the holiday season.

The Super Mario Run smartphone game has reached 200 million downloads worldwide. Kimishima revealed that overseas downloads account for more than 90% of the downloads. He added, "Although we have not yet reached an acceptable profit point, we have learned a lot in terms of game development and deployment that we want to take advantage of moving forward."

The game launched for iOS devices on December 15 and for Android devices on March 22. The game third major update launched in September.

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition console has sold 2 million units worldwide. The mini console featuring 21 pre-loaded games shipped in North America and Europe on September 29, in Australia on September 30, and in Japan on October 5. Nintendo revealed in September that it will continue shipments of the console into 2018 due to unanticipated demand. The company will also offer new shipments of the original NES Classic Edition next year.

The Nintendo Switch console shipped on March 3, and the company has sold more than 7.63 million units worldwide as of September 30, before the launch of Super Mario Odyssey. This includes 1.95 million units in Japan, 3.11 million units in the Americas, and 2.56 million units in other regions. In addition, Nintendo has sold 27.48 million units of Nintendo Switch software.

Kimishima also revealed that more than 300 software publishers, including indie developers, are developing games for the Nintendo Switch.

The Nintendo 3DS family of systems has sold 68.98 million units as of September 30. Nintendo noted a spike in sales in July corresponding with the release of Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age in Japan.
