Kemono Friends' Fox Girls Try to Figure Out Udon in Animated Short

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

The popular Kemono Friends anime series has had no shortage of collaboration opportunities, namely with zoos across Japan, the Japan Racing Association, and the Animelo Live Summer concerts. The latter two got tie-in animated shorts starring the animal girls from the series.

Nissin Cup Noodle is the latest to hire the colorful cast to promote its wares. In a one minute short released on Tuesday, Kitakitsune (Ezo red fox) and Gingitsune (Silver fox) try to figure out how to cook Nissin's Donbei Kitsune Udon. The pun here being that the product includes the word "kitsune" (fox), which is the usual signifier that udon contains fried tofu curd. This is the same kind of tofu that is stuffed with rice and sold as inari at sushi restaurants.

Suzuko Mimori stars as Kitakitsune and Yūka Aisaka is Gingitsune. TATSUKI returned to direct the short with art director Yūko Shiromizu and composer Akiyuki Tateyama.

Nissin previously promoted its Donbei Kitsune Udon with live-action commercials starring actress Riho Yoshioka (Detective Conan: The Crimson Love Letter) as a fox girl and singer Gen Hoshino (Saint Young Men, Night is Short, Walk On Girl) as the surprised bachelor eating the noodles in his flat.

Kemono Friends is inspiring a new smartphone game titled Kemono Friends Pavilion after the first mobile app ended service in December. The anime received an unofficial "episode 12.1." Kemono Friends is also getting a new stage play and a "new screen project" (separate from "episode 12.1"). An official guidebook for the anime confirmed that a second season is in the works but it "will take some time."
