Late Macross Composer Honored at Orchestra Performance in September

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Ten years ago the anime industry lost one of its brightest stars, composer Kentarō Haneda, to liver cancer. Haneda composed the music for The Super Dimension Fortress Macross television series from 1982 to 1983, for which he won the Japanese Anime Grand Prize for Music, and The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? film. The franchise is honoring Haneda, as well as celebrating its 35th anniversary, this September with a new orchestral concert.

The Macross 35th Anniversary × Kentarō Haneda 10th Memorial "Super Spacetime Orchestral Music" remember Healthy Wings Orchestra will take place on September 17 at the Tokyo International Forum. Tickets go on sale via Ticket Pia on August 4 followed by general sale on August 19.

The orchestra is made up of 80 performers and conducted by Satoshi Uegaki of the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. Voice actors Mari Iijima (Lin Minmay), Shō Hayami (Maximilian Jenius), and Eri Takeda (Milia Fallyna Jenius) will appear at the performance. Franchise character designer Haruhiko Mikumoto drew the flyer for the event.

Haneda also composed the anime music for Treasure Island (1978), Space Adventure Cobra (1982), The Super Dimension Century Orguss (1983), the Final Yamato film (1983), the Barefoot Gen film (1983) and its sequel (1987), God Mazinger (1984), Detective Holmes (1984), Brother, Dear Brother (1991), and the Doraemon: Nobita and the Legend of the Sun King film (2000).
