Anime Expo VR Experiences Include Death Note, Shōnen Jump, Idols

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

This year's Anime Expo convention in California will host multiple virtual reality experiences, whether it's a Death Note escape game or 3D idols.

The virtual reality attractions are part of the convention's larger Japan Character VR line-up coordinated with publisher Shueisha. The line-up includes a seven-minute Death Note escape game, a Shōnen Jump virtual art museum, interactive manga, and puzzles that call on users to rebuild One Piece's Chōpper and Bleach's Kon into 3D characters.

In the Death Note escape game, players must find their way out of a flooding basement by calling on the Shinigami Rem to assist them.

Publisher Kodansha is bringing its VR idol group Hop Step Sing! to the event. Players can get front-row seats to the group's debut and second single performances. The characters are designed by tanu, who previously worked on both Tari Tari and Flip Flappers. Polygon Pictures brought tanu's designs to the three-dimensional world and composer Yashikin put the finishing touches on their music. Maria Sashide, Mariko Toribe, and Natsumi Hioka provide their singing talents to bring Hop Step Sing! to life. The group's two singles are also available on Steam.

Players can also change up the pace with the indie virtual reality stealth horror game ChainMan. A playable demo of the first-person zombie game will be available before the game launches on Steam in August.
