Police officer allegedly found marijuana while searching car Tanaka was driving

Tokyo Metropolitan Police arrested singer, actor, and former KAT-TUN member Koki Tanaka in Shibuya on Wednesday for suspicion of marijuana possession. Tanaka denied the suspicion, claiming the marijuana authorities found was not his.

According to police, Tanaka was driving a van on a road in the second district of the Dōgenzaka area of Shibuya ward on Wednesday when at 6:50 p.m., a police officer ordered him to halt. Upon searching his vehicle, the officer supposedly found marijuana stashed between the driver and passenger seat. The police noted that Tanaka was alone in the vehicle, and did not seem to be driving under the influence.

Tanaka is a former member of boy band KAT-TUN, which has been on hiatus since May 2016. The group debuted in 2006 with six members, but Jin Akanishi left the band in 2010 and Tanaka left in 2013. Junnosuke Taguchi left the band in March 2016. The remaining members include Kazuya Kamenashi, Tatsuya Ueda, and Yūichi Nakamaru.

The band performed the opening theme song for the second season of The File of Young Kindaichi Returns, and Kamenashi previously played the titular character in a 2005 live-action special. Tanaka played the character Takahashi in the same special. Tanaka also played Gyokuei in Ōoku: Tanjō - Arikoto・Iemitsu Hen, the live-action television adaptation of Fumi Yoshinaga's Ōoku: The Inner Chambers manga.
