Dismantled Life-Size Gundam Mimics 'Last Shooting' Pose During Final Days

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Crews dismantled a legend this month. The life-size Gundam statue that stood outside DiverCity Tokyo since 2012 is no more. Bandai took down the 59-feet-tall mecha, but not before the crew gave it one last send off by recreating the famous "Last Shooting" pose, the last shot fired by the RX-78-2 Gundam at the end of Mobile Suit Gundam.

The crew first removed the statue's left arm, followed by its head to echo the pose.

The result isn't a perfect replica. The statue's right arm remains at its side instead of pointed defiantly in the air.

The choice to remove the left arm and head int his order seems unlikely to be a coincidence. The "Gundam Front Tokyo" attraction at the DiverCity Tokyo mall held a memorial exhibit to honor the statue until March 5. The attraction was the second part of the "Gundam Statue Gundam Front Tokyo: Last Shooting Campaign." The campaign represented "a symbol of gratitude" and examined the question "What was the life-size Gundam statue?" from various angles.

The "Gundam Front Tokyo" attraction will close on April 5. The Gundam Base Tokyo complex will take its place this summer. The complex on the mall's seventh floor will be Japan's largest one devoted to Gundam plastic models (Gunpla), as well as a "base" for disseminating news and information to Gundam fans.
