Hear Escaflowne's Maaya Sakamoto Sing Katy Perry — in English

Voice actress/singer covers "Firework" as a sow in U.S. CG film Sing

You know her from Escaflowne, Black Butler, Card Captor Sakura, the new Evangelion movies, and dozens of anime she voiced or sang in. But do you know Maaya Sakamoto's Katy Perry impression?

That's right, the voice of Escaflowne's Hitomi takes on Katy Perry's "Firework" for Japan's dub of the American CG film Sing — and she does it in English! She plays Rosita, a housewife sow who seflessly gave up her idol dreams to raise 25 piglets. (Reese Witherspoon plays Rosita in the original.)

After the sneak preview of her cover performance in the video above, Sakamoto discusses getting asked to play the role, her thoughts on Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off" (spoiler: she loves it), and doing duets.

This isn't her first time dubbing overseas films or even voicing an aspiring singer. Outside anime, she's best known for dubbing Padmé Amidala in the Star Wars prequels and other roles by Natalie Portman, and she starred as the insecure but talented Rachel Berry in the Japanese dub of the Glee TV show. And she sang the ending theme song "Gravity" in English for the Wolf's Rain anime.

The film Sing debuts in Japan this Friday.
