The main staff of the Tatami Galaxy anime is returning for the film. Masaaki Yuasa (Kick-Heart, Ping Pong, Mind Game) is directing the film at his Science SARU studio, and Makoto Ueda is writing the script. Yūsuke Nakamura, the cover artist for the original novel as well as Tatami Galaxy, is designing the characters. Michiru Oshima is composing the music, and Asian Kung-Fu Generation (The Tatami Galaxy, Erased) is performing the theme song.

Kadokawa published the original novel in 2006, and it won the Yamamoto Shūgorō Prize and the second place Japan Booksellers' Award in 2007. The novel has more than 1.2 million copies in print. The story takes place in Kyoto, and follows an upperclassman ("Sempai") who falls in love with his underclassman ("Girl with Black Hair") and tries to get her attention.

Ranmaru Kotone drew a manga adaptation that online reading platform JManga once listed in English before it shut down in 2013.

Yuasa is also working on his Yoake Tsugeru Lu no Uta (Lu over the wall or "Song of Lu who Informs the Dawn") original anime film, which opens in Japan in May.
