Controversial Artist Rokudenashiko Working with Film Team on LGBT Law Firm Doc

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
Documentary is currently raising funds on Kickstarter

Artist Megumi Igarashi —pen name Rokudenashiko—gained the world's attention after the 44-year-old was arrested for distributing 3D printer data of her own genitalia as part of a backer reward for her crowdfunding campaign to construct a vagina kayak.

She was found guilty and fined 400,000 yen (US$3,690) for the crime. She has since married Waterboys frontman Michael Scott and moved to Dublin where the couple is expecting the birth of their first child in February.

Her case and trial could live on with the help of a Kickstarter project. Director Hikaru Toda is planning a documentary titled "Of Love & Law" chronicling Fumi and Kazu, a gay couple and lawyers running Japan's first law firm focusing on queer rights. The documentary will not only focus on their personal hardships (like the inability to adopt a child) but also Igarashi's case.

The team wants to raise £30,000 (US$37,424) which will fund an animation component to tell Igarashi's story and other expenses for creating the film. So far the project has raised US$13,525.

The Queer Japan Project by director Graham Kolbeins and co-writer Anne Ishii included an interview with Rokudenashiko, Gengoroh Tagame, and others.
