Nintendo Goes Retro for Classic NES Release

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
Brings back Power Line for tips

Tons of companies are hopping on the retro bandwagon lately, including the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Now, Nintendo is celebrating the the 1980s for the launch of its NES Classic Edition console. The system is going on sale on November 11 in North America and Europe (Japan, on the other hand, is getting a Nintendo Classic Mini Family Computer [Famicom] on November 10).

Nintendo is kicking off the launch with a 80s-themed party at its Rockafeller Center store in New York City on November 10. The party is limited to the first 250 visitors. The company's social media accounts will also go back in time to what the company describes as "a time when “social media” involved trading passwords and game tips on the school bus."

Perhaps most exciting is the limited three-day return of Nintendo's Power Line tipline. In the time prior to the internet we know now, when walkthroughs were only available in print form, Nintendo hired Nintendo Game Play Counselors to man their Power Line phone line. Gamers could call in for help with Nintendo games when a level was particularly tough. The relaunch will be fully automated for several games and also have behind-the-scenes stories from previous Counselors. Players can call (425) 885-7529 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. PST from November 11-13.

The NES Classic Edition will come with:

  • Balloon Fight
  • Bubble Bobble
  • Castlevania
  • Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
  • Donkey Kong
  • Donkey Kong, Jr.
  • Double Dragon II: The Revenge
  • Dr. Mario
  • Excitebike
  • Final Fantasy
  • Galaga
  • Ghosts 'n' Goblins
  • Gradius
  • Ice Climber
  • Kid Icarus
  • Kirby's Adventure
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Mario Bros.
  • Mega Man 2
  • Metroid
  • Ninja Gaiden
  • Pac-Man
  • Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream
  • StarTropics
  • Super C
  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Super Mario Bros. 2
  • Super Mario Bros. 3
  • Tecmo Bowl
  • Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

The system goes on sale on November 11 for a retail price of US$59.99, which includes an HDMI cable, an AC adapter, and a NES Classic Controller; controllers will also be sold separately for US$9.99. Wii and Wii U owners—who can already play a large selection of NES games via Nintendo's Virtual Console—can use use this controller for NES games on their newer consoles.
