RPG's trailer previews Urpina, Leonard, Balmaint, Taria

Square Enix began streaming a new trailer on Tuesday for its upcoming SaGa Scarlet Grace PlayStation Vita role-playing game, revealing its December 15 release date. Sony originally revealed the trailer during its "2016 PlayStation Press Conference in Japan" event on Tuesday. The trailer features gameplay of the characters Urpina, Leonard, Balmaint, and Taria.

Square Enix also streamed a longer trailer on Wednesday for the game.

The official website describes the story's prologue:

After being banished for betraying the star gods, the evil god "Firebringer" returned as a comet. The suppressed dark demons also became violent, and the world faced a crisis.

The star gods granted one man power. He established an empire and led the people to wage war on Firebringer. The dark demons were pushed back underground, and Firebringer's star was sent away. Thereafter, the Firebringer's star and the dark demons have returned every 150 years. Many ages of emperors have battled Firebringer and the dark demons. Usually, the emperors prepare and can easily defeat the evil god, but there are also unprepared emperors who drive the world to ruin.

Akitoshi Kawazu is handling the game's design and scenario. Kenji Itō is composing the music, and Tomomi Kobayashi is providing illustrations.

Square Enix released the Makai Tōshi SaGa (The Final Fantasy Legend in North America) in 1989. Since then, there have been many installments in the series, including ports and remakes. The last full-fledged SaGa game, Unlimited Saga, was released in 2003. A social game inspired by the games was released for Japanese mobile phones in 2012. Square Enix released the Imperial SaGa browser game in Japan in June 2015.

Square Enix released the smartphone port of Romancing SaGa 2 on iOS and Android in English worldwide in May, and the company is "working now" on an English version of the game for PlayStation Vita. The PS Vita version shipped in Japan on March 24.
