Glass Mask Manga Gets School Comedy Anime Spinoff in October

posted on by Rafael Antonio Pineda
Spinoff stars Kana Asumi, Rumi Ookubo, Atsuko Tanaka, Yūki Kaji, Daisuke Ono

Tokyo MX announced on Tuesday that a new spinoff television anime based on Suzue Miuchi's Glass no Kamen (Glass Mask) manga has been green-lit. The 3D anime is titled 3-Nen D-Gumi Glass no Kamen (3rd Year Class D Glass Mask), and it re-imagines the manga and its characters in a school gag comedy focused on satirizing modern society. It will premiere on Tokyo MX on October 3 at 9:55 p.m.

The cast includes:

Kana Asumi as Maya Kitajima

Rumi Ookubo as Ayumi Himekawa

Atsuko Tanaka Chigusa Tsukikage

Yūki Kaji as Yū Sakurakōji

Daisuke Ono as Masumi Hayami

Michio Machida is directing the anime at DLE Inc. Deko Akao (Noragami, Flying Witch, Arakawa Under the Bridge) is writing and supervising the scripts. Kio is credited for CG character design and modeling. Ponpoko P (Naria Girls) is credited as "MMD Director." Akiko Ashizuka from DLE Inc. and Ryō Kotake from Happinet are credited as producers. Ryūta Shiiki from DLE Inc. and Takuya Sasaki from Happinet are credited for planning. Miuchi is credited as supervisor.

Miuchi launched the manga in 1975, and it inspired a 1984 television anime series and a 2005-2006 anime remake, as well two live-action television series. There was also a three-part video series that started in 1998. Miuchi acknowledged in 2009 that she would end the manga "soon," and stated in 2014 that the manga is moving closer to the ending. The 50th compiled volume of the manga was delayed indefinitely in 2013, and the 49th volume was released in 2012.

Before producing this new anime, Flash anime studio DLE had already produced the parody television anime Glass no Kamen Desu ga (It's Glass Mask But) in 2013, as well as the first Glass Mask film, Glass no Kamen Desu ga Onna Spy no Koi! Murasaki no Bara wa Kiken na Kaori!? (It's Glass Mask But: Female Spy's Love! The Purple Rose Has a Dangerous Scent!?), in the same year.
