Comiket's Genre Categories Reorganized, Expanded

posted on by Amanda Whalen
Popular franchises like Attack on Titan, Love Live!, Mr. Osomatsu get their own categories

The official website for Comiket, Japan's largest dōjinshi convention, revealed some changes to its genre categories on Tuesday. Visitors wont see the changes at this August's Comiket 90, but starting with Comiket 91 many popular series will be getting their own separate categories, while several other categories will be merged and rearranged.

textThe IDOLM@STER and Love Live!, which are currently included in the category "Girl Games," will each be getting separate categories. Similarly, Ensemble Stars! will get its own category, separate from the "Games (Romance)" genre.

World Trigger will be pulled from the "Franchise Comics (Jump etc.)" category to stand on its own, while Gintama and Prince of Tennis will be merged back in, no longer getting their own categories. Also, the entire "Franchise Comics (Jump sports)" category is disappearing, absorbed by the "Franchise Comics (Jump other)" category, although Haikyuu!! and Kuroko's Basketball will get their own separate categories. Osomatsu-san will be pulled out of the "Anime (Other)" category to form its own category.

textThe Gangan manga category will be merged into shōnen manga, while Yowamushi Pedal, Attack on Titan, and Ace of Diamond are leaving shōnen manga to get their own categories. Shōjo manga and seinen manga will also be combined, although Blood Blockade Battlefront will be pulled out of the seinen manga category, getting its own individual category.

Comiket 90 will be held from August 12-14 in the Tokyo Big Sight. Admission is free, although purchasing the convention catalog is encouraged.

Comiket, or Comic Market, is held twice a year, in August and December, and tends to be incredibly popular. Last December's Comiket 89 attracted about 150,000 attendees on the first day alone.
