"Naked Restaurant" to Open in Tokyo in July

posted on by Eric Stimson
Patrons restricted by both age and weight

The Amrita, a restaurant that hearkens back to the time of Adam and Eve and is named for the Hindu drink of immortality, aims for an all-natural ambience, with organic foods, oils and candles. This extends to its patrons, who are expected to strip off their clothes — which is why it also calls itself "the Naked Restaurant."

Despite the name, diners at its upcoming opening in Japan will wear paper underwear (or "Roman-style" shawls and bathrobes, if they prefer) provided on entry. There are age and weight restrictions: 20 to 60 years old, plus a weight within 15 kilograms (33 pounds) of the average for your height. Cameras and cell phones also get locked away.

The Amrita promises a classy Men's Show as well, featuring "top-class dancers and models" who are "private weight instructors for Hollywood celebs and VIPs" and Playgirl cover models. Even the waiters are "muscle waiters" who were chosen by audition overseas and will be wearing nothing but a G-string.

The Amrita will open on July 29 at 6 PM and last for three nights; the Men's Show will last an hour and take place at 6:30, 8:30 and 10:30 PM. Prices for entry to the restaurant range from 14,000 to 28,000 yen ($131 - $261); prices for the show range from 12,000 to 80,000 yen ($112 - $748). The restaurant will be located in Tokyo's port district, but the exact location will only be revealed three weeks in advance by mail "for security reasons." If you're interested in attending, make your reservation here (the Men's Show takes a separate reservation). July 29 is already sold out.

Naked restaurants have previously opened in Britain and Australia. Although they haven't been naked, bars and cafes in Tokyo have previously offered well-muscled staff or catered to a macho clientele.
